We are glad to inform that the paper entitled “Evaluating a graphical notation for modelling software development methodologies” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Visual Languages & Computing (Volume 23, Issue 4, Pages 195-212). In this work the authors: Kenia Sousa, Jean Vanderdonckt, Brian Henderson-Sellers and Cesar Gonzalez-Perez, evaluated a graphical notation for modelling software development methodologies. As such, they demonstrate the use of graphical aspects for sharing knowledge among stakeholders responsible for documenting information, understanding and re-using it. The paper emphasizes the importance of having a common graphical notation for creating, using and disseminating information for larger audiences.

By using a cognitive dimensions framework, they performed a standard evaluation of elements and diagrams of a notation proposed to support the ISO/IEC 24744 methodology metamodel standard, considering the trade-offs across dimensions. The main contributions of this work consist in: improving the enactment diagram to facilitate the organization of processes according to a visual timeline, improving action diagrams by adding further details, specifying goals’ types, improving the legibility of the diagrams.

More detailed information about the paper can be retrieved online at: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1045926X12000237

The first Serenoa workshop will be held jointly with the Ambient Intelligence conference, in Pisa (Italy), on November, 13th, 2012.

Given the importance of performing context-aware adaptation in a scenario of ubiquitous, pervasive and mobile computing; this workshop aims at reviewing the state-of-the-art in this domain and promoting the discussion among the interested community.

Besides, we intend to discuss positive and negative experiences, related works, and to highlight criteria and requirements that may drive context-aware adaptation in this scenario.

The workshop is organized by Francisco Javier Caminero Gil (Serenoa project coordinator), Fabio Paterno (CNR – ISTI) and Jean Vanderdonckt (UCL).

This workshop will last half a day, and participants are welcome from any background or discipline that is concerned with the main topic (Context-aware Adaptation).

For further information please refer to the webpage:www.serenoa-fp7.eu/casfe2012

Due to its significant requirements, the environment is often one underexplored dimension of context in context-aware adaptive applications. Besides requiring a constant sensing of dynamic variables, environment-aware adaptation also requires significant processing capabilities which may cause, among other problems, performance issues. Although, sometimes neglected, the environmental information has a large application for context-aware adaptation.

Aware of such importance, Google requested and got last week, on 20th March, a patent for environment-aware adaptation, named “advertising based on environmental conditions”. Such patent comprises all advertising contents that are created based on environmental information.

In summary, this patent is defined as follows:

Information about an environmental condition of a remote device is received, the environmental condition being determined based on a signal output from a sensor of the remote device or a sensor coupled to the remote device. An advertisement is identified based on the environmental condition, and the advertisement is provided to the remote device.

The complete specification of this patent can be retrieved in its website.

Serenoa project is now registered at Ohloh, a social community online to manage open source coding.

Ohloh is a software directory for generation of community-driven content. Source code crawlers permit the dynamic monitoring of the development activities. Ohloh will be used from now on as a functional code repository for the Serenoa project. It also permits to crawl the svn, to generate code metrics, and to execute collaborative commits.

Any developer can use Ohloh’s directory to look for projects and softwares, and also to look for developers who are interested in collaborating with open source projects. Ohloh permits the analysis of review reports, the comparison of different projects and languages, and the analysis of contributions per developer.

The most popular projects of Ohloh include: Mozilla Firefox, Apache HTTP Server, MySQL, PHP, Linux Kernel and Firebug. The project of Mozilla Firefox, for instance, counts today with 10813 users.

Ohloh’s most active projects include: Gentoo Linux, OpenX, Arch Linux Packages, GNOME, Chromium (Google Chrome), Linux Kernel and Boot to Gecko. The Gentoo Linux project, for instance, has today 7687 comits.

You can find further information about Ohloh’s projects at: https://www.ohloh.net/

More than 20 participants were present there to discuss the main points of model based development of User Interface description languages.
The working group received 8 submissions of proposals for UIDLs, these proposals will be continuously analysed and discussed until the achievement of a recommendation candidate by 30 August 2013.
