th the support of leading global network operators, plans to launch an open mobile ecosystem based on HTML5. This operating system, named Firefox Mobile OS, aims at powering the launch of smartphones by developing all device’s capabilities as HTML5 applications.

The open Firefox OS is seen as an exciting new entrant to the smartphone market, and as an opportunity to deliver smartphone experiences at attainable prices. TCL Communication Technology (Alcatel) and ZTE intents to manufacture the first devices with Firefox OS. They are expected to be commercially launched in Brazil in 2013.

According to the Mozilla blog announcement:

The Firefox OS for mobile devices is built on Mozilla’s “Boot to Gecko project” which unlocks many of the current limitations of web development on mobile, allowing HTML5 applications to access the underlying capabilities of a phone, previously only available to native applications.

They believe that by optimizing the platform and removing middleware layers, the mobile operators can offer richer experiences at reasonable prices. And as such, achieving also developing markets.

The participants are committed to ensure a fully open project and the reference implementations are submitted to W3C for standardization.

Chrome breaks 20% globally in June

Google's Chrome exceeded 20% of the worldwide internet browser market during the month of June for the first time. Chrome took 20.7% of the global market, up from 2.8% in June 2009. In the same period Microsoft's Internet Explorer has fallen from 59% to 44% globally and Firefox dropped slightly from 30% to 28%.

Chrome has performed particularly well in South America where it overtook Firefox in April to become the number two browser. In June it reached 29.7%, ahead of Firefox's 24.6% and behind IE at 44.1%.

In the US Chrome has risen to 16% behind market leader IE on 46.5% and Firefox on 24.7%. In the UK, Chrome at 21.1% is now neck and neck with Firefox on 21.7%. IE leads the UK market on 46.4%.
